Benefits of learning a foreign language in the era of globalisation

“ A different language is a different vision of life.” – Federico Fellini, Italian film director

“No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive.” – Mohandas K. Gandhi, Indian nationalist and spiritual leader

Learning a foreign language enables learner the ability to peep into the mind and music of that other culture. Without the knack to communicate and comprehend a culture as the aboriginals do, true knowledge of that particular culture is deprived. Why is this imperative? In a world where nations and peoples are ever more reliant upon on another to provide goods and services, work out political disputes, and for ensuring international security, understanding other cultures is vital. Lack of intercultural sensitivity can lead to distrust and misgivings and thereby, result in a failure to work together, negotiate and finding the middle ground.

Intercultural understanding is set in motion with individuals who are gifted with language abilities and who can thereby present one’s own nation or society with an insider’s view into foreign cultures, who can identify with foreign news sources, and provide insights into other perspectives on global scenarios and current affairs. For continued existence in the international community, every country needs such people. A person proficient in other languages can fill the gap between different cultures and also contribute to international relations, strengthen national security and world peace, and effectively engage in worldwide trade.

The concepts of globalization which relates to eliminating barriers to trade, communication and cultural exchange ; mobility in terms of labor, ideas, capital, technology and profits has brought the world ever closer together. It is worth reckoning that ever more pressing is the need for worldwide citizens to be competent in foreign languages. The United States is the only developed country that consistently produces graduate students from high school who do not have the knowledge of a foreign language. Statistics state that 52.7% of Europeans can boast of  students being fluent in both their mother tongue and at least one foreign language, only 9.3% of Americans are fluent in both their native tongue and another language. This statistic does not speak well for the future of America in a global civilization. The increasing trend in language learning must pick up the pace if the U.S. is to continue to be a major contributor on the international arena.

Mandatory Attendance for colligates

Every student is bound to think at some point in his or her college career to attend college classes, or lose points or face difficulty/problems in coping with the syllabi/academic course by himself?  Many college and university professors have made the class attendance mandatory for the benefit of the students. This decision has been taken because of the mounting number of drop-outs and failing students, just because they seldom attend classes/ module sessions. Even most faculty members, who do not require attendance by their students, encourage attendance in a variety of ways. The mandate of class attendance will benefit the students as well as the faculty of the colleges and universities for several reasons.
Research validates the fact that student performance inside the classroom and on the score card is greatly dependant on the attendance of the student. Studies prove that the most valuable and vital time commitment in a course was the time actually spent by the student in the classroom because class attendance facilitates learning in lot many ways. Classroom lectures are a wonderful supplement for reading assignments.  Teachers prepare presentations that are different from the text material for a better and easy understanding. They discuss and elaborate topics and provide the students with the updated information that may not be found in the textbook. Class attendance facilitates learning in a variety of ways. Lectures supplement reading assignments. Classroom presentations present information differently than the text. Hearing the comments and questions of others can answer your questions. Instructors can use class discussion to enhance critical thinking skills. They can pose questions that require students to make connections between concepts and relate what they are learning to real life. The more students analyze and examine material, the better their retention will be. As you can see, attending class on a regular basis gives you much more than just credit for attendance.

Its well known and a clear observation that students who fail a course did not attend their classes on a regular basis. Regular class attendance calls for discipline and time management skills. These skills are useful no matter what career path you decide.  Student’s interaction becomes very diverse if he is within the college premises, he gets to meet a variety of faculty members, experts on the subjects, scholars, researchers etc. The likelihood of discovering mentors/counselors and role models who can facilitate their overall (academic, career, and personal) development is very high for the regular attendees. And Students do seem to be aware and also acknowledge this very fact!
