Tertiary education

Tertiary education, also referred to as third stage, third level, and post-secondary education, is the educational level following the completion of a school providing a secondary education. Higher education is taken to include undergraduate and postgraduate education, while vocational education and training beyond secondary education is known as further education in the United Kingdom, or continuing education in the United States.

Colleges, universities and polytechnics are the main institutions that provide tertiary education (sometimes known collectively as tertiary institutions). Tertiary education generally culminates in the receipt of certificates, diplomas, or academic degrees.

University students who undergo their first years in tertiary education face new challenges as university life is a learning environment where independent study is central to education. Interaction between the students and lecturers is limited. In tertiary education, analytical skills take precedence over the ability to memorize. Hence, for a successful academic result, students must strive hard and utilize all possible resources. This includes writing down all the major points from lectures and taking advantage of all available materials – using the supportive mediums provided by institutions such as online lecture notes and PowerPoint presentations.[1]

Obese teachers create sedentary students

I just got back from the National Convention for the National Association for Education of Young Children, held in Chicago. It was an awesome experience – 17,000 creative people who care about the future of our kids. I presented a session entitled, “Physical Literacy – Building Smart, Healthy Kids” and I had an incredibly positive response to this new message. You see, the answer to our problem of inactivity in kids isn’t “exercise”. Exercise is an outgrowth of physical literacy the way that reading is an outgrowth of academic literacy. We need to tackle the core of our inactivity problem, which is teaching kids the skills they need to be physically active – things like motor skills, coordination, agility, balance, spatial awareness, etc. Learning a comprehensive set of physical skills won’t happen by accident, any more than academic learning happens by accident. It needs to be planned and purposeful. Our national education motto is “no child left behind”, but we are leaving children behind in physical development every day! How sad that the bodies they live in will become a burden instead of a joy. But, it doesn’t have to be that way. We can do something to change it – we’re not helpless, and we need to do something besides just wringing our hands over the obesity epidemic in kids.

One thing I became very concerned about at the national conference, was the number of obese people teaching our young children. I was absolutely shocked at the percentage of overweight and obese people walking by our Gymtrix booth (Gymtrix is a DVD series designed to teach young children physical literacy skills). For the most part, the overweight and obese teachers walked passively by our Gymtrix booth, uninterested in a tool to teach physical skills to kids. But, we had many “fit” teachers who stopped, very excited about finally having a way to teach their students to be physically active. These teachers knew the joy and benefit of physical activity in their own lives and wanted to learn how to share it with their students.

Now, if an overweight or obese teacher has no physical activity in their own life, how can they be effective as a role model and educator to teach young children the importance of an active lifestyle? Would we expect academically illiterate people to teach our children to read? The answer is obvious. Yet, we are leaving our children behind physically, and then whining because they are couch potatoes and overweight. HELLO! Wake up everybody! Choose your preschool and day care carefully. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education has recently released national physical activity standards for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. In a recent study, NONE of the preschools and daycares studied met the minimum standards for physical activity!   Studies now show that one in five preschool children are already obese. This is a call to action and an appeal to educators, parents and administrators. Please quit talking about the problem and do something about it!!!

Biggest Job Search Hurdles in Education

Most job seekers today in the education sector are more organized in their job search and are better prepared when it comes to discussing specific topics related to teaching skills or other related expertise in education management. The bigger question lies on whether or not the applicant knows all the job search hurdles that may affect them when looking for a job in education. There are plenty of unspoken job search related issues that can pose a great hurdle for those looking for employment opportunities in the education sector.

For starters, you need to look at some of the more obvious reasons why employers eliminate applicants from the hiring process. A good example of this is arriving late for a scheduled interview. This is a big no-no because this will definitely not help to enhance your image in front of the person conducting the interview. When they say be on time, be on time and do not arrive too early or too late. But this is just a superficial example because there are far more fatal mistakes you can commit in your job search which can result in the forfeiture of your opportunity for a job interview.

One of the biggest job search hurdles in the education sector is poor resume preparation. There are various formats for creating a resume, but most applicants commit the most basic mistake of giving out resumes that do not state specific job responsibilities or expectations from previous employment. On the whole, employers certainly want to see a detailed resume filled with important information that can give employers a basic impression of the capacity and working capability of the applicant.

Another job search hurdle for applicants in the education sector is poorpreparation for a job interview. You must understand that in order to impress a potential employer you need more than just a professional appearance. When you show up for your scheduled job interview, you need to be prepared. This means that before you go, you need to conduct your own background research with regards to the employment needs of the school and other specific information which can help employers understand that you are a knowledgeable individual always prepared to answer relevant questions.

But above all else, the biggest hurdle for job seekers in the education sector is their work experience. More often than not, learning institutions that look for a teaching staff, or someone in the management level, require someone with enough relevant experience. To avoid frustration, only send your application to a school where you can meet the imposed employment requirements. If you are highly interested in a particular institution and you want to pursue your application, make sure you are prepared to defend your lack of experience and how to compensate it with your personal skills and core values.

Discipline in Student Life

Discipline is an important virtue. Life without discipline is just like a ship without a rudder. It is necessary for expressing other virtues. It is absolutely essential for success in life. Discipline refers to orderliness in life which results from our adherence to certain code of conduct prepared by the learned people. It also implies our respect to physical and moral laws in our society.

Without discipline, it is very difficult to lead a happy life in society. There will be indiscipline and chaos if we try to live in our own way. Both, individual and society will be in jeopardy.

We observe discipline in nature. The earth and the moon revolve around the sun in a disciplined way. As a result, night and day recur after twelve hours. We experience the cycle of seasons on the earth. Our physical existence is possible only due to a great discipline in the external nature. We grow when all the limbs and the respective capacity of different organs of our body grow in a disciplined way.

Discipline can be applied in all walks of life. It is essential for us at home, for students in school and college, for players in play ground, for soldiers in battlefield. A factory with a team of disciplined workers and engineers will run smoothly and yield profit.

Discipline plays an important role in building a nation. It has good impact on the child’s mind too. He passes through discipline since his childhood, becomes a civilized citizen in future. He leads a decent life.

A team of experienced players often lose the match because of indiscipline in the team. A horrible battle can be won by a disciplined army.

Discipline is very important in a student’s life. He must obey his teachers. He must abide by the rules in school. If he violates them, he suffers a great deal in his future. A disciplined student can achieve success. Similarly, a teacher without discipline in his life cannot be an ideal teacher.

Self-discipline is very important. Spiritual persons practice it to attain the liberty of soul. Self-discipline lies in restraining our unruly desires and ugly     impulses.

Thus, discipline is essential everywhere for all.

Eating and sleeping habits to be maintained by students..

Eating habits Sans watchful attention to your diet, your health would go for a toss. Follow these easy tips to facilitate a healthy diet in the long run! 1. Learn appropriate portion size. To avoid overeating much of even the healthiest foods, check how much you’re eating. For the majority of people, non-vegetarian servings should be equivalent to the size of a deck of cards and other servings may differ depending on the type of food (calories it has). 2. Have a lot of variety in your meals. When the cafeteria offers you favorite foods on a daily basis it can be really tempting to return to those goodies every day. Varying your diet from day to day is an integral part of high-quality nutrition so take advantage of the assortment of selections available to you. 3. Do not miss breakfast. begin your day with a hearty cum healthy meal. Whether you’re wake up at noon or up at the crack of dawn for work, ensure you begin your day with a balanced, healthy meal. 4. Keep healthy snacks within arms reach. It’s easy to eat healthy if you keep the junk food at bay and stock your rack with fruits, sprout salads, fresh juices etc. You’ll be unlikely to reach for junk food if they happen to be easily available. 5. Drink in moderation. While college students are known for boozing- partying, you can still have a great time without binging on alcohol, plus you’ll steer clear of the hangovers and other harmful effects. Always drink moderately and make your self believe that you can have a good time without harming your health. 6. Do not over eat to beat stress. It can be alluring to reach for a bag of chips or some cookies when you’re hassled about an approaching exam. Eating won’t help your stress go away, so avoid filling up on snacks. Try to work out or taking a break instead. 7. Drink water. Drinking enough water can help boost your concentration as well as keep you from overeating. Make sure to keep hydrated as you go through your day by bringing water with you. 8. Restrict yourself from consuming sweetened and caffeinated beverages. Beverages may not fill you up, but they sure can help fatten you up and have a unfavorable effect on your overall health. You don’t have to completely give up soda and coffee, but you should scale back in order to keep yourself in tip top shape. 9. Try to eat fruits and veggies. Even if fruits and vegetables don’t comprise some of your favorite foods, try to incorporate at least a few of them into your diet each day. 10. Limit junk food. Junk food is fast and easy and many students end up eating a lot of it while they’re on the run to class or to work. While a little fast food now and again won’t really hurt you, make sure it doesn’t become a habit. 11. Make it convenient to eat right. Don’t make it hard for yourself to eat right. Buy healthy foods and stock your fridge and room with them to ensure they’re the first things at hand when you get hungry. 12. Don’t skip meals. With so much to do, it’s easy to forgo eating to run off to class or the library. Don’t skip meals. Set up foods you can eat on the run so you’ll have the energy to keep going. 13. Indulge every once in awhile. A small treat now and then is a wonderful means to reward your self for eating a healthy diet. Give yourself a break and indulge in a food you love but can’t eat all the time. 14. Vitamins intake. If you feel like you aren’t getting the nutrition you need from your diet, do supplement it with some multi-vitamins to stay healthy and sickness free. 15. Seek help for eating disorders. While many groups focus on helping students lose weight, there are those who need help fighting eating disorders as well. If you are worried you have an eating disorder and want help, try to reach out to campus resources for help.

Exercise

Fitting exercise into a busy schedule isn’t always the easiest thing, but take stock of some of these tips to help you get on track to fitness.

  1. Stretch first. Help yourself avoid injuries by stretching each time you exercise. Simple stretches before and after you work out or engage in physical activity can help keep you active and pain free.
  2. Ride your bike. Instead of taking the bus or driving to class, try biking instead. It will give you a few minutes of exercise between your courses.
  3. Play a sport. One way to get yourself motivated to exercise is to make it a game by playing a sport. Join an intramural team or play recreational sports through your school to get active and have fun at the same time.
  4. Use safety equipment. No matter what sport you’re playing, make sure to always use the proper safety equipment. It will keep you from getting hurt which will allow you to stay active more often.
  5. Head to the gym. Most schools provide students with gym facilities they can take advantage of for free. Head to the gym between classes or when you get up in the morning to squeeze in a workout.
  6. Take advantage of fitness courses. Along with gym facilities most students will have access to fitness classes they can take. Since you’re already paying for these through your tuition you may as well take advantage and get a workout that will help keep you in shape and motivate you.
  7. Walk to class. While taking public transportation might be quicker, walking will give you a chance to stretch your legs, burn some calories and relax before your next class.
  8. Incorporate different kinds of exercise in your routine. When you work out, don’t just stick to one kind of workout. Incorporate strength training, cardio and stretching exercises into your routine to make it well rounded.
  9. Make it fun. You’re probably not going to work out if you are bored with your routine or find going to the gym torture. Find a way to make it fun for yourself and you’ll be much more likely to keep it up.
  10. Bring a friend. With someone else relying on you showing up, you’ll be much more likely to make the effort to work out. Plus, working out with a friend can be a great way to make working out more fun.
  11. Take advantage of open spaces. Most colleges are equipped with large grassy quads or arboretums with trails you can walk on. Take advantage of these spaces to take hikes, play frisbee or just walk around.

Memorization Tips

Whether you were a child trying to memorize the lines in a play, or an adult trying to recall items on a grocery list or important points for a presentation at work – we use the same processes. We learn to use memory from a very young age and therefore associate these tips and tricks of learning information from childhood. This demonstrates that using the simplest forms of remembering and recalling as possible is the most effective way to ensure that you can remember something when you need it.

The process of memorizing information occurs in the brain in one of two forms; short term memory or long term memory. In most cases, we use a combination of these two memories to form the thoughts and concepts that are used to formulate processes of thoughts. When trying to recall information, whether it is short or long term memory, there are certain memorization tips that can be used to increase the chances that we will remember something.

Here are some popular memorization tricks that can be helpful when trying to recall information:

Association
Learning to associate the list or concept that you are trying to remember are effective ways to boost your memory power. Think about something that is easily associated with the list or item that you are trying to remember, something familiar that you come into contact with every single day. This makes the recalling process of the list easier.

This association can come from word association, as well as image association. When trying to remember simple or complex concepts words can be used to associate each word with concepts.

Visualization
Visualizing the aspect that you are memorizing is an important part of memorizing something. If you are able to Visualize the item in forms of a picture it can make is easier to recall the item later.

Visualization is another form of association and can include visualizing an image that becomes engrained in our mind in combination with the words and concepts which are trying to be learned.

Sing it
Singing what you are trying to remember, associating it with a regular song can cause the memory to become stuck in your head, making it easy to remember – or hard to forget. Think about short small jingles that can be easily remembered are the most effective way of being able to recall something on demand.

Singing to learn a memory is one of the earliest and most effective forms of memory tips and tricks that are used to learn new concepts.

Associated the memory with something Unforgettable
There are certain things in life that are unforgettable like the people that we love and the fears that we hold. If we learn to associate these items with something that we are trying to remember it can be easy to commit something to memory.

Teach it
Teaching it is one of the best ways to memorize something as you are able to use all of the learning types in the process. This way, you use all of the mediums which are associated with learning and therefore can find an effective way to commit the lesson or the terms to memory. Even if you are saying the words aloud and teaching your dog, it is still an effective way to commit something to memory.

Using these methods can help to recall information in a snap when you require it. Therefore, it can be simple to boost memory power through these small tips and tricks that can help you to remember the easiest of information from to-do lists and even lines that need to be given with a presentation that you must give at work.

Memory techniques and tricks are not tricks, they are merely ways that we can train the brain to deal with memory and organize the thoughts that are associated with memory. When we are able to create these techniques, it can be an essential way to teach our brain and constantly evolve within the learning experience. Therefore, using these tips and techniques to engage the brain in the activity that is associated with memory is an effective way to increase the short term memory abilities, as well as the long term memories.

How to cope up with the feeling of being rushed?

Feeling rushed turns us into someone we are not.  Our faces become tight and squished, we snap at people, become unkind, make mistakes, drive like lunatics, forget things and stress our bodies to the max, unnecessarily.

To help dissolve that rushed feeling inside and come back to a kinder pace of life I’m sharing a few tricks I’ve either picked up from workshops, personally use or friends have sworn by.

The key of course, is to notice when you are feeling rushed.

If you only have time for one tip (because you are too rushed) remember your breath is the bridge between your body and your mind.  The more you focus on your breath the less chance you have of living in your head, feeling disconnected and rushed.

15 clever ways to stop feeling rushed:

1: Cheat Take a herbal sedative: I don’t mind saying, I am addicted to the herb, passion flower. I prefer it in liquid form rather than tablet.  Whilst I’m not a herbalist, I do know from years of experience, whenever I’m feeling rushed or stressed passion flower slows me down on the inside and takes off the edge.  It never fails me.

3 potent natural herbal sedatives:

2: Listen to your thoughts in slow motion: This little trick is perfect for when your mind is rushing along at 1,000 miles per hour.  Simply spend the next 30 seconds listening to your thoughts in really, really, slow motion.  You’ll notice how rushed and cluttered your thoughts were before hand.  Slow the speed of your thoughts to feel less rushed.

3: Unhunch shoulders and unsquish your face: A tight, tense and squished up face is not a good look.  Loosen the frown, relax your face muscles (smile) and unhunch your shoulders.  This is a good start to slowing yourself down from the inside and releasing some of the built up stress.

* 12 ways to release muscle tension (on the spot)

4: Empty your thoughts by writing them down: I need to do this more often, especially before bed if my mind is still in rushing mode.  Once the scramble of thoughts are out of your head, and onto a piece of paper you’ll find yourself breathing a sigh of relief.  Sanity will prevail, and you can let it all go until the morning. Journaling is very therapeutic.

* The benefits of journal writing

5: Close your eyes: Your eyes can easily absorb lots of stress and anxiety from what they are witnessing.  Close your eyes, give them a rest and withdraw your visual attention from the outside world. Keep your eyes closed as you  “pull in” your scattered energies.  A few minutes resting your eyes with a yoga eye pillow will soothe your eyes, calm your mind and relax your body.

6: Focus on one thing for 30 seconds: A rushed mind cannot focus; not even for 30 seconds. It’s always jumping from the past into the future and then back into the past again, conveniently forgetting about, the here and now.  Grow your 30 second “slowing down” muscle simply by focusing on one thing, your breath, an object, thoughtful word or calming mantra for 30 seconds.

7: Spend time alone: Often its your external living or work environment that’s overstimulating you. Removing yourself from noisy, busy, hectic environments can be the perfect medicine in allowing yourself to come back centre again and feel calmer on the inside. Turn off the phone, unplug the noise and be with yourself.

* Rest is not a weakness, its essential.

8: Go outside: Nature never lets you down.  Nature has a very natural ability to ground and centre you. Nature is very healing. Try walking in nature, standing and looking at nature (sky, tree, clouds) or simply sit and eat your lunch in nature.  Living in a concrete jungle disconnected from nature, encourages you to live in your head. Let your feet touch the ground, grass or sand, let your nose smell the air, let your skin feel the breeze, let your eyes witness the beauty.  Spend time in nature and get grounded.

9: Stop listening to others: Other people, the news, computers or radio, can contribute to your rushed feeling. Be mindful of what you are hearing and listening too.  Do you best to limit yourself to people who are worry warts and stress heads, particularly when you are feeling fragile and depleted. Use your exhale to push their energies away.

10: Listen to music: Block out the toxic urban sounds around you with a good dose of sound therapy to soothe that rushed feeling inside.  Dr. Emoto, in his research, has proven that listening to the Blue Danube and other pieces of music will nourish your nervous system in times of stress and fatigue.  At the moment I’m listening to The Flow Of Grace by Krishna Das

11:  Walk away: Feeling rushed is not a productive state.  Walking clears your head and shifts the energy in your body.  Treat yourself to a change of scenery by walking and calming your agitated mind.  Walking reminds you that you have a body. As Dr. Christian Northrup says increased blood circulation equals increased joyful feelings.

12: Create some breathing space: Rushed thoughts lead to tight, tense, short and shallow breathing.  You deprive your body and mind of oxygen. Deepen and slow down your breath to encourage the flow of energy to your extremities. Spend longer on your exhale, as you imagine pushing it all away.  Use your breath to create space around you, your thoughts and your environment.

* Your breath as medicine

13: Grab a hug: Hugs are for feeling (not thinking).  Hugs nourish your sense of touch, comfort, calm and relax you in rushed times. Hugs simply fuel your heart with the good stuff.  A good hug will get you out of your head and back into your body.   Click here for 10 hugging tips to grab on the run.

14: Think of the word I trust:  Believe it or not this little trick works a treat for me.  Just saying or thinking the word I trust (a few times) reminds me that I can’t control everything, and I simply need to trust in life’s process and that everything happens for a reason.  Repeating the words I trust brings me gently back to my centre and into the present moment.

* A valuable tool for a worried mind

15: Avoid caffeine: A sure fire way to speed yourself up even more is to drink more coffee, soda or energy drinks. Switch one caffeine drink a day for a glass of water, mug of miso soup or green tea.  May I recommend a mug of miso as a great alternative if you are wanting a warm drink, it’s really nutritious.

Time-out

Time-out from reinforcement (“time-out”) is a procedure in which a child is placed in a different, less-rewarding situation or setting whenever he or she engages in undesirable or inappropriate behaviors. Typically, time-out is used in tandem with positive discipline techniques. For example, time-out might be employed to reduce the frequency of a student’s negative behaviors (e.g., loud confrontations with teaching staff) while an individualized reward system might be put in place to increase the frequency of appropriate student behaviors (e.g., quickly and courteously complying with teacher requests). Teachers should keep in mind important ethical considerations when using time-out. Because one consequence of time-out is that children may be excluded-even if briefly-from their instructional settings, the approach should be used only when less intrusive behavioral interventions have been tried and found to be unsuccessful. Also, students obviously cannot be deprived of lunch, bathroom breaks, or extended periods of classroom instruction just because they are placed in time-out. Because time-out is intended to reduce the frequency of a target behavior, it is classified (in the technical sense) as a punishment procedure. As with other types of punishment, the use of time-out can result in unintended negative effects on the student. Therefore, students should be carefully monitored when time-out is being used. All incidents in which the student is timed out should be recorded in writing. Consider discontinuing any behavior management strategy if the student shows a strong, sustained negative reaction to it. (Refer to What Every Teacher Should Know About…Punishment Techniques and Student Behavior Plans for a review of aversive approaches to discipline and their possible unintended effects.) Preparation: Because use of time-out in the classroom can impact a student’s inclusion with peers and access to instruction, Yell (1994) advises that teachers take the following precautionary steps in preparing for and using time-out: • Verify that the state and school district permit the use of student time-out as a behavior management strategy. • Get signed parent permission to use time-out with students (particularly if using either the exclusion or isolation/seclusion forms of time-out).. • Log all incidents in which time-out is used as a behavioral consequence. Note key information about time-outs, including the date and time of each time-out incident, the student who was timed out, and the location and the duration of the time-out.
