Grade grubbers….Another article from iQuest’s reader digest

Grade grubbers are students who feel the need to have a better score than their classmates. They indulge in the malpractice of comparing their scores with others. Some students are focused, like a laser beam, only on the grade. They go to all lengths to argue after losing even half a point in an examination paper and get into a heated discussion with their co-students or teachers for getting their scores right. They behave like a mad raving dog when a friend who didn’t work quite as hard scores 2 points higher on a paper and therefore ceaselessly contest their scores. But being so fixated on your grades robs you of any enjoyment in your school/college and can backfire when you infuriate your professor into nit-picking your grade downward. They settle for nothing less but the highest, prettiest score for themselves. The grade grubber will ask for extra credit, etc. in order to raise their grade or will argue with a teacher to try to get an A. The “A” is the prize for the student, not the learning itself. A grade grubber will bend over backward to do whatever is needed to get an A — because the student wants an A, not because the student has any interest in the material. Once the A is assured, the grade grubber is no longer involved with the material.

New Year Special – An article on New Year’s resolutions for students by Rashi (iQuest Commerce Academy)

We would like to wish a very Happy and Prosperous New Year to our readers…

The beginning of a New Year and, for many students, is a time for reflection between semesters. New Year’s resolutions go hand in hand with the New Year, since it is critical to sink your teeth in on the very onset of the New Year. This will safeguard you from losing balance in 2012, protect you from being surpassed by your lecturer and keep you from being weighed down by bulky course material.

How can you say if your resolutions are relevant and will help you gain success, happiness and a sense of accomplishment? You must remember that even if your efforts may not seem to provide immediate change, seek consolation in the fact that you are planting the seeds of change. You are moving yourself even if subtly, towards a more fruitful and happier life in which pressure will be a helpful cue to catalyze the right things to be done. And that leads to an increased sense of personal success.

Here are a few resolutions that are most likely to help you as a student:

  • Don’t procrastinate. Time happens to be one of your most valued possessions. Promise to handle it with the utmost care so you aren’t always feeling pressurized, rushed, imposed upon …In other words practice time management.
  • Always say no to things that will only distract you from your studies. College is full of wonderful, thrilling and fantastic things. But there are 24 hours in a day, and only so much you can practically expect out of yourself.
  • Seekacademic help, even if you think you do not require it. Sure, you will probably earn a passing grade in your paper. But approaching to a coaching center or a personal tutor for instance, for some helpful feedback just might make help you doing a stellar job in the exam …
  • Make healthy choices. Eat healthy food (fruits and veggies and avoid junk food), sleep adequately and exercise regularly.
  • Keep stress at bay. Managing your stress may be one of the best resolutions you can make for the New Year.Go beyond your comfort zone. Try to do something innovative, participate in extracurricular activities, whether it’s taking a totally random elective subject (music, dramatics etc) or doing a part-time job. The point is to create well-rounded, knowledgeable adults – not robots who are book worms. A good New Year’s resolution for students is simply to keep in mind that being doing well in college does not mean losing yourself totally in your studies.
  • Believe and work in terms of what you’d like to add to your life, rather than what you’d like to cut out. For example, instead of setting the goal to “Avoid Eating Less Unhealthy Food”, you must focus on trying to “Eat More Healthy Food”. You may be hit by a strong feeling of deprivation on a subconscious level if something is taken away from you or you are forbidden to do something. If you substitute unhealthy food in your diet with healthy food, the same goal is attained. Also, it’s usually easier to add a behavior than to discontinue a certain kind of behavior.
